And that was about it for the QM2's inaugural visit to Red Hook. Posted by Picasa

The farewells continued... Posted by Picasa

After three enormously loud blasts of its horns, the QM2 inched out of the dock and passed in front of Valentino Pier. It really was like something out of an old newsreel as people started waving and shouting goodbyes. The woman next to me screamed, "take me with you!!" Posted by Picasa

Security was tight, even on the water. It seemed that in Red Hook, there were cops on every corner. Here's a police boat with a tug and Governor's Island in the background. Posted by Picasa

The Valentino pier, packed with people waiting for the ship to pass by. Posted by Picasa

Minutes before casting off, the QM2 framed by a cyclone fence. Posted by Picasa

Seemed like the whole neighborhood came out to see the ship. Posted by Picasa

Detritus at Valentino Pier. Red Hook. D70. Posted by Picasa

Normally I don't post photos of what is essentially other people's art. Photography that is a straightforward representation of other people's efforts always seemed strange to me. But I am posting this photo because since I took it, the white lime or whatever it is bleeding from the Manhattan Bridge anchorage has completely obscured this excellent piece, which is, you'll certainly notice, designed to utilize the valve underneath.
